Meet The Parent Empowerment Network Director
Juanita Doyon is an award winning education author and the mother of two public school
graduates and two current public school students. Through 20 years of
public school parenting and advocacy, she has worked to improve communication
and cooperation between home and school. Juanita was awarded the
prestigious Golden Acorn by both Shining Mountain Elementary and Bethel
Junior High Parent Teacher Associations for her work with and for
children. Her book, Not With Our Kids You Don't! Ten Strategies
to Save Our Schools, is published by Heinemann and used in
teacher education courses. It
received the District Administration District's Choice Award, Top 100
Products, 2003.
Juanita's work to return the education
of children to the rightful and competent hands of parents and
teachers has gained respect throughout Washington State and the nation.
Her quest to improve education for all children of Washington State led her to
run for Superintendent of Public Instruction, in 2004. She is
often an invited speaker on the topics of the politics of education,
high-stakes testing and "No Child Left Behind" policy,
in university classes and at conferences, most recently the International
Dyslexia Association conference, the Washington Association for Learning
Alternatives conference and the International Learning Disabilities Association
conference.
Juanita believes that when parents and
teachers work well together children succeed.
